Thomas B. Lee Sr.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Thomas B. Lee Sr., 95, formerly of Old Orchard Beach and Saco, passed away on Friday afternoon, Oct. 7, 2011, at St. Andre Health Care in Biddeford.

He was born on March 15, 1916, in Biddeford, the son of the late John and Katherine (Callary) Lee.

Prior to his graduation from Biddeford High School in 1934, Mr. Lee excelled in high school football, baseball, and basketball.

In the 1950s, Mr. Lee was an apprentice instructor at Saco Lowell Shops. For many years, he was a supervisor at Maremont and retired in 1981.

Mr. Lee was an honorary lifetime member of the Biddeford-Saco Country Club, a member of the Southern Maine Senior Golf Club, Hibernians, Foreman’s Association at Maremont, and a member of St. Margaret’s Church in Old Orchard Beach, where he served on the church council and served as an usher.

He also was active in Old Orchard Beach government, including serving as a councilman for four years and as council chairman in his second year, and town election warden.

For over at least 15 years, Mr. Lee was a dedicated bail commissioner serving York County.

He will always be remembered as an avid golfer and enjoyed the sport throughout his life. He was proud of having two “hole-in-one” over the years. Besides his passion for golf, he was an all around sports fan and enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and Boston Celtics. Years ago, he played in the Saco Lowell Shops baseball league.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Irene (Marcotte) Lee; son, Terrance Lee, who passed away last year in Texas; and his siblings, Joseph Lee, Dennis Lee, Catherine, Sister Augustine, Esther Christian and Theresa Cleary.

Mr. Lee is survived by children, Robert Lee of Nashua, N.H., Thomas Lee Jr. of Old Orchard Beach, Michael Lee of Denmark, Deborah Lee of Houston, Texas, and Catherine Sturtevant of Manchester, N.H.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 4-7 p.m., at the Old Orchard Beach Funeral Home, 36 Portland Avenue, Old Orchard Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret’s Church in Old Orchard Beach. Burial will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Biddeford.
