Elwyn C. Wheaton

Elwyn Wheaton

Elwyn C. Wheaton died April 19, 2024 in North Conway, N.H. following a year’s-long battle with esophageal cancer, with his family by his side.

Born in North Conway on January 11, 1962, he grew up in the western Maine towns of Fryeburg and Kezar Falls, as well as North Chatham, N.H., which was home to his parents during the 1970s and 80s and before them, his grandparents, Mildred and Loren Andrews.

He was the only son of Lou and Ola-Mae Wheaton. A 1980 graduate of Fryeburg Academy, he earned an engineering degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1985.

Elwyn was known locally as “The Moose Guy” because of his successful moose-touring business of 18 years, North Conway Moose Safari. He was always a music lover (attended at least five live concerts of Bob Seger!) and was a regular fixture at the Valley’s musical venues. He was looking forward to John Fogerty’s celebration tour concert at the Bank of NH Pavilion in Gilford in June.

Elwyn was predeceased by his parents and his older sister Andrea.

He is survived by sisters Susan Logan of North Conway, N.H., and Mary Jane Fiske and husband Jim of North Andover, Mass. He also leaves nephew Jeremy Graffam and wife Annie of Incline Village, Nev., nieces Jessica MacLeod and husband Allan of Methuen, Mass., and Loren Fiske White and husband Cam of North Andover, Mass., along with nephews Jimmy Fiske of North Andover, Mass., and Jonathan Logan, of North Chatham, N.H., and Northampton, Mass.

A celebration of his life will be held in North Chatham this summer, details to be determined.

Donations in Elwyn’s memory may be made to the Chatham Historical Society, 1061 Main Road, Chatham, NH 03813, or Jen’s Friends Cancer Foundation, PO Box 1842, North Conway, NH 03860.

Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg is in charge of the arrangements.
