Sylvia J. Berry

PORTLAND — Sylvia June Berry died on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010 in Portland.
She was born in 1925, the daughter of Charles A. and Junita E. Snow of Fryeburg, and was the wife of Richard N. Berry of Portland, who survives her.
Mrs. Berry spent her earlier years at her Fryeburg home, graduated from Maine Central Institute of which she was a later member of the Board of Trustees, and attended Becker and Thomas Colleges.
Among a number of positions in the workplace, she was employed in the office of the Western Maine Forest Nursery, as Maine supervisor of the Welcome Wagon program, as a reporter for the Waterville Morning Sentinel and the Associated Press, and as secretary of the president of the Maine Senate. She was an early president of the Maine Press and Radio Women’s Association.
She was married in 1944 to her MCI classmate, Willard Lehr Jr. of Pittsfield, and in 1975 to her present husband.
In addition to her first husband and last homes, Mrs. Berry has lived in Pittsfield, Augusta, Cape Elizabeth and South Bristol.
She was predeceased in 1966 by her sister, Emily Sinclair.
Surviving are a son, Ronald Lehr of Raymond; three grandchildren; three stepsons, Andrew, Richard Jr. and Thomas Berry.
A private committal will be performed at a later date from the banks of Cold River at the site of her beloved family camp in the White Mountains of Stow.
