SAD 61 budget passes; voters keep referendum process

By a 347 to 182 margin Tuesday, voters approved the SAD 61 budget that was adopted at the district-wide meeting held two weeks ago at Lake Region High School.

The $29-plus million budget was approved by 42 voters at the district meeting, and passed in all four towns:

Bridgton, 102 yes, 53 no

Casco 57 yes, 27 no

Naples 112 yes, 55 no

Sebago 76 yes, 47 no

Despite poor turnouts to the district budget meetings the last couple of years, voters decided to keep the current process, 343 to 181.

The “yes” vote means SAD 61 will continue to hold a budget meeting followed by a validation referendum (secret ballot vote) in each of the four towns. This method will be used for the next three years.

A “no” vote would have eliminated the referendum vote, and simply used the district-wide meeting to either approve or reject the proposed budget.

Here’s how each town voted on the measure:

Bridgton 91 yes, 63 no

Casco 46 yes, 37 no

Naples 105 yes, 58 no

Sebago 101 yes, 23 no
