BERLIN, MASS. — Robert J. “John” Newton, 74, of Berlin, Mass. died peacefully with his family by his side at MetroWest/Framingham Union Hospital on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Judith (Allsobrooks) Newton, of Berlin.

John was born and raised in Marlborough, Mass., son of the late Raymond and Mary (Gomes) Newton. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War until being honorably discharged.  John was employed with the Massachusetts Laborers’ Union and has resided in Berlin for 39 years.

John truly enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time. He looked forward to his frequent trips with his wife Judie to their log cabin, which he built in Sweden, where they enjoyed off-road adventures on their ATV and spent time canoeing and kayaking.  He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Dana J. Carpenter of Wake Forest, N.C. and Denise L. Parker of Boylston, Mass.; his stepchildren, Robert S. Slattery of Sweden and Johnson City, Tenn., Timothy W. Slattery of Westford, Mass. and Tracey L. Holden of Conway, N.H.; his eight loving grandchildren; his sister, Phyllis Dinges of Corpus Christi, Texas; his two brothers, Edward J. Newton of Yuma, Ariz. and William Newton of Ossipee, N.H.; his many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two grandchildren; his brother, Harold R. Newton; and his sister, Mildred Cook.
