Rachel Bacon

NAPLES — Rachel Howard Bacon passed from this earthly world on April 1, 2024, at Country Village in Casco.

She was born on April 25, 1931, in Bridgton, a twin to Robert L. Howard formerly of Colorado Springs, Colo. Their parents were Ruth L. and Laurence P. Howard of Bridgton.

Rachel attended school in Bridgton, graduating from Bridgton High School in 1949, the same year that she married Malcolm A. Bacon of Naples. Their marriage lasted for 57 years as he predeceased her in 2006.

Rachel did many volunteer activities through the years, many connected with Malcolm and their children, among them the Naples Swim Lesson Program, Naples Scholarship Foundation, Naples Methodist Church and Boys and Girl Scouts.

Later, after their children were grown, she and Malcolm enjoyed many years belonging to some fraternal orders. They belonged to Pondicherry Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in Bridgton where they held many offices and were Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron. Rachel also was the Grand Marshal for the Grand Chapter of Maine in 1994. She was a member of Daughters of the Nile and its Queen in 1989.

Rachel was very musical. She played the piano and organ. She played for the school when she was employed as teacher aide, the fraternal orders she belonged to and in 1998 became the church organist at the Naples Methodist Church where she played until she was 90 years old.

She was predeceased by her brothers and sister, Arthur, Lewis, Mary and Robert as well as her oldest son, John.

She is survived by four children and their partners: Malcolm and Irma Schmoller, Mary Reed and Arthur of Poland; Patricia Sharkey and Jack of Warren; and Justin and Jackie of Bridgton. Also, six grandchildren, Matthew Reed and Meredith, Kelly Reed, Michael Feero and Jen, Rachel Oakes and Michael, Nathaniel Bacon and Tamara, Jameson Bacon and Carolynne as well as 11 great-grandchildren.

A service celebrating Rachel’s life will be held in the Naples Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 with a reception following in the church vestry.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Naples Methodist Church or the Pondicherry Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in Bridgton.
