Peter C. Madura, 73

Peter C. Madura, of Bridgton, passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2021, in Kissimmee, Fla., surrounded by his wife and children.

Peter was born in Portland, Maine, on June 25, 1947. He was the son of Elizabeth Bradford Furlong and Teoful Charles Madura. Peter graduated from Bridgton High school in 1965. He attended Central Maine Vocational Techni-
cal Institute in 1965 and is a veteran of the United States Air Force. Peter worked for Shaw’s Supermarket as a produce department manager from 1970-1980, Fryeburg Police Department as a part-time patrolman from 1979-1980, Oxford County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy sheriff and civil deputy in 1980 and then continued his law enforcement career serving the community of Bridgton for the Bridgton Police Department from 1980-2015. He worked his way up through the ranks from patrolman to acting chief and retired in 2015 as a lieutenant. Throughout his career, he received multiple awards and designations. One of his proudest moments was when he received a Meritorious Service Award in 2002.

Peter also served his local communities in other ways by being part of the Naples Rescue as a training officer and rescue member, showed his love of football by coaching the Lake Region Junior High Football Team, and was on the SAD 61 School Board as chairman of the finance committee and chairman of the facilities committee. Peter was also on the board of directors as trustee for Bridge Crossing in Bridgton. In addition to his law enforcement career and community service, Peter ran a successful property management and caretaking business. Peter retired to follow his and his wife Mary’s passion for travel.

Peter enjoyed traveling throughout the country by motor home with his wife and family and spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid hunter and a strategic cribbage player, and also enjoyed spending time with his two miniature Yorkies, Bella and Buddy. He was a wonderful storyteller of his life’s escapades which made people laugh, he was a teacher of the value of life, he was selfless, compassionate, generous and big-hearted. He also saw the good in people even in difficult situations.

Peter is survived by his wife Mary of 54 years; his daughter Stacey Sawyer and husband Theodore of Bridgton; son Roger Madura and wife Jennifer of Manomet, Mass.; and daughter Darcey Madura-Pomerleau and fiancé Larry Blanchet of Naples. He had five grandchildren, Brittany, Gabe, Jakob, Abi and Robbie; two step-grandchildren, Richard and Sandra; one great-grandchild, Charlotte.
