Nina Keene

Nina R. Keene, 95, of Bridgton, passed peacefully from the world on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, with her loved ones by her side at the Bridgton Health & Residential Care Center in Bridgton, where she had been a resident.

She was born in Calais, on Jan. 24, 1920, a daughter of Daniel W. and Sarah (McLaughlin) Hill. Nina graduated from Calais Academy in 1937. She worked as a seamstress for the Ware Knitters in Calais and Berlin, N.H. After her marriage to Maurice she was employed at the Bridgton Dress Factory until she retired. She had a great love of gardening, and was well-known in her neighborhood for the wonderful vegetables she shared throughout the street.

Two things that Nina was directly involved in were the repair of the clock at the First Congregational Church on South High Street, and the Lakes Environmental Association, which created the Pondicherry Loop Trail directly behind the Keene property. Nina was very pleased that she was able to work on these projects.

She is survived by two special nieces, Beth Doten Sperdakos and Sally Doten; a nephew Paul Moreshead and wife Marye; and seven other nieces and nephews that were special to her in their own way. She will also be missed by her dear friends Michael Ruhlin and his daughter Annika, and her special nurse Laurie Greene and husband Steve.

She was predeceased by her parents; her devoted and loving husband Maurice; sisters May Hill and Ella (Bee) Moreshead and brothers Gerald and Louis Hill.

Graveside committal services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the Forest Hills Annex Cemetery in Bridgton. Those who wish may make a donation to Bridgton Hospital at 10 Hospital Drive, Bridgton, ME 04009, or to Beacon Hospice, 245 Center St., Suite 10A, Auburn, ME 04210.
