Mary M. Crawford

WESTBROOK — Mary Monica Crawford, 49, died unexpectedly on Monday, May 16, 2011.

She was born in Portland on March 29, 1962. She attended Portland schools, graduating in 1980 from Deering High School.

Mary was employed from the age of 17 at Northeast Insurance, now Tower Group, working her way up through many positions within the company.
She enjoyed her volunteer work at the Root Cellar with the Neighbors at Noon Program, the Barron Center and Springbrook Health Care Center, and at the Long Creek Correctional Facility. She taught Sunday School at West Falmouth Baptist Church, was involved in church activities at the First Baptist Church in Westbrook, and recently attended Coastal Community Church in Scarborough. She also volunteered at Spring Harbor Hospital and was a strong advocate for the mentally ill; at one point testifying in Augusta to restore funding for needed programming.

Mary was most noted for her strong faith, beautiful smile and giving heart. She was one who would give the shirt off her back if she knew someone needed it. She thrived on making a difference in others lives, often supporting the “underdog,” and was an amazing listener and friend. She loved children and was especially blessed to spend time with her beloved nieces and nephews, her family, and many lifelong friends. Her greatest desire was to follow the will of God, and she was passionate about helping others do the same.

She was predeceased by her mother, Donna Mains; and a nephew.

She is survived by her father and his wife, Robert and Shirley Mains of Standish; her grandparents, Ernest and Florence Mains of Westbrook; three brothers, Robert Mains of Westbrook, Gerald Mains and Ted Mains, both of Portland; nieces, Jamie and Jessicca Mains of Denmark and Windham; four nephews and a niece; and her great-niece, Rainah Dennison of Denmark.

Visiting hours were held on Friday, May 20, 2011, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham. A celebration of life service was held on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the First Baptist Church, 733 Main Street, Westbrook. Online condolences may be made to www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com
