Jane D. Sampson, 99

PORTLAND — Jane Drew Sampson, 99, died peacefully in Portland on Thursday, March 2, 2017.

She was born in Portland on Feb. 20, 1918, the daughter of David F. and Mary Blanche (Chaplin) Drew. Jane attended Portland schools, graduating from Deering High School in 1936. Following high school, she went to work for Talbot, Brooks and Ayer, a local wholesale hardware company, where she met her future husband Stanley Sampson. She later worked in the office of Evergreen Cemetery.

Jane and Stanley were married in Standish on July 13, 1940. They lived in Portland until 1965 when they moved to Windham Hill to be nearer Stan’s business. There, she was a member of Windham Hill UCC and its Women’s Fellowship, Ladies of Kiwanis, and Windham Hill Club, holding offices in them all.

Jane and Stanley raised two children, a son Stan Jr. and a daughter Sylvia. Family was always foremost with Jane. She enjoyed summers as a child at Watchic Lake and in later years at Little Sebago Lake. She and Stan eventually put in a pool at their home to create more space for family time.

A sweet and gentle woman, Jane was also very creative. She sewed, knitted, crocheted, braided rugs, stenciled, and did other crafts. During WWII while Stanley was away, she designed and sold patterns to yarn companies. Her church, its life, and her friends there were very important to her. She loved crafting for the church fairs.

She was predeceased by her husband Stanley; her son, Stanley Jr.; and her brother, David Drew Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Sullivan of Raymond; her four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Windham Hill United Church of Christ, 140 Windham Center Road, Windham, with burial later in the spring at Mayberry Cemetery in Windham.

Arrangements are by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham. To express condolences and to participate in Jane’s online tribute, please visit www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com
