James Roby Peabody

A little over three months after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer (as a non-smoker), and two weeks after celebrating his 48th birthday, Roby passed away at home on December 30 in Telluride, Colo.

Roby graduated from Lake Region High School in 1994. He left Bridgton for Telluride, where his uncle put him to work driving snow cats at the local mountain. Telluride has remained his home since.

He was the owner and operator of Telluride Forestry Solutions which specialized in land management, wildfire mitigation, trail construction and maintenance, compost tea application and dangerous tree removal. Active in the Telluride community since 1994, Roby participated in and took over organizational responsibilities for the annual nude bike ride and the Lunar Cup, organized the Bourbon Wing Off and spontaneously created other endearing events that stayed true to Telluride’s wild spirit.

Roby was known by most around town as a fearless snowboarder (he liked to see “air”), lover of bacon and bourbon, and a funny, brilliant man who loved a good joke.

He is survived by his parents, Charles and Patricia, who until recently lived in Bridgton, and his sisters Rachel and Bethany, his nieces Hannah and Brittany, his nephew Victor, his brother-in-law Mike Romero, Frank Strunk III, and his many friends clients, collaborators and cohorts.

A celebration of his life will be held in the park in Telluride from 1-4 a.m. on June 2, 2024.
