James Sakofsky

James J. “Jim” Sakofsky, of Bridgton, died at home on April 13, 2024, with his family at his side following a five-year struggle with the effects of a traumatic brain injury. He was 84.

Jim was born on Nov. 26, 1939, in Port Jervis, N.Y., a loving son of Sidney and Eva (Miller). He attended Ithaca College, Berklee College of Music, and received a master’s degree in Trumpet Performance from Julliard as a scholarship student.

During his career, Jim performed with the New York City Opera, the Garden State Symphony and the Mexico City Philharmonic. He also performed with many municipal and community bands.

Jim taught extensively in New Jersey public schools, as well as privately in his home. After retiring to Maine in 2005, Jim continued to teach and perform with community concert bands.

Jim was a strong Christian, teaching Bible studies and leading worship groups. His faith was an example to many.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Cynthia, and his son, James.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol; his daughters Sarah and Rachel, and sons Joshua (Alex), Christopher and Daniel (Kate); a brother, Carl, and sister, Marcia, six grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jim’s family would like to express their appreciation to Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice for their wonderful end-of-life care.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date.
