Herbert D. Lehmann, 93

Herbert D. Lehmann, 93, of Sebago, died on Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at Bridgton Hospital.

He was born in Middletown, Conn., on Oct. 19, 1918, the son of Frank and Lillie Emmons Lehmann. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1936. He served in the U.S. Army, 42nd Rainbow Division, during World War II.

He married Gladys H. May in 1954; together they shared 52 years of a loving and happy marriage.

Herbert was a clerk/mail carrier in the Cromwell, Conn., post office and a salesman at Davis Lumber in Middletown, Conn. He served as Adjutant and Commander of Cromwell American Legion Post #105. They moved to Maine in 1967, where he worked for L.C. Andrews in South Windham as a salesman and store manager, and at Gendron’s Lumber and Hardware on Warren Avenue in Portland. Later, he did janitorial work for the Sebago Town Office and for the Sebago Center Community Church, as well as being a handyman. The church has a shed in the back named “Herb’s Hideaway.”

He was clerk and a member of the Sebago Center Community Church, a member of the Maple Grove Grange #148, where he served as secretary and Master for many years, and a member of the 50+ Club in Baldwin.

He is survived by a daughter, Bonnie M. Snow of Sebago; three grandchildren, Mark Snow of Casco, Glenn Snow of Sebago, and Neal Snow of Dorchester, Mass.; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys, on May 17, 2006, and a sister, Marjorie Geer.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m., at Babb Cemetery in Sebago. Arrangements are under the direction of Chandler Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 8 Elm Street, Bridgton. Online condolences may be shared with his family at www.chandlerfunerals.com
