F. Sheldon Mains

RAYMOND — F. Sheldon Mains, 86, of Raymond, died after a brief illness on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010.

He was born on Dec. 18, 1923, in Portland, the only child of William Jasper and Ruth Alice (Sheldon) Mains. Sheldon attended Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School in 1942. He was a WWII veteran serving from February 1943 to July 1945. Sheldon was wounded in Stolberg, Germany on Nov. 21, 1944, for which he earned a Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster.

On Oct. 30, 1948, he married Grace Ella Ryder. They moved to Raymond in 1954. As well as being a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather, Sheldon was active in Boy Scouts, a Hawthorne House Trustee, Raymond School Board member and a 32nd degree Mason. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, stamp collecting and woodworking. His favorite place to be was at the red camp on Sebago Lake.

He was predeceased by his father in 1948, his mother in 1972; his wife in 2002; and his son Claude (Mac) in 2010.

Surviving are four daughters, Martha Brown of Belfast, Linda Bowser of Westbrook, Sharon LaPlante of Limington, Alice Hannon of Windham; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Hall Funeral Home, 165 Quaker Ridge Road, Casco, where a celebration of his life will be held 11 a.m. on Friday. Burial will be at Murch Cemetery. On-line condolences may be left for the family at hallfuneralhomeinc.com.
