Evelyn J. (Sanborn) Scribner

PORTLAND — Evelyn Jean (Sanborn) Scribner, 82, of Portland, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

Evelyn was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on Oct. 12, 1931, the daughter of the late Herbert and Florence Sanborn.

She attended schools in N.Y. and Maine, and was a member of the last class to graduate from Denmark (Maine) High School.

Evelyn was a very talented writer, of short stories, history, educational materials, and poems. She loved research, including family genealogy. She took pride in managing her financial investments. Close financial advisors of hers over the years described her as a feisty, intelligent lady, who also had a dry sense of humor. Evelyn was active in Maine politics for many years, and followed political and public policy issues closely. She also loved animals of all types, and supported the work of the Animal Refuge League. While her family roots were in Maine, which she loved dearly, Evelyn also lived and worked in Washington, D.C., for a time, and traveled to such places as the Soviet Union.

Evelyn lived for the past six years at Seventy-Five State Street, where many people, especially Lori Maxwell, made Evelyn a welcomed member of that community. The family is also very appreciative of the compassionate support provided in Evelyn’s final days by the VNA hospice team, including Hope, Cara, and others, as well as the staff at St. Joseph’s Manor, including Nicky, Lisa, and others.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, as well as her sister, Ellen Fries. Evelyn is survived by her niece, Kymberly King, and her nephew, Jonathan Fries, both of Tex. Also surviving are several cousins: Suzanne Austin of Kennebunk, William Sanborn of Denmark, Vaughn Sanborn of Fla., Anne Barton of Denmark, Carolyn Slayman of Conn., and Peter Walch of Portland.

At Evelyn’s request, there will be no funeral service. A graveside prayer service will be held in the spring at Berry Cemetery in Denmark, Maine. Donations in Evelyn’s memory may be made to: Seventy-Five State Street 75 State Street, Portland, ME  04101, or VNA Home Health Hospice, 50 Foden Road, Suite 3, South Portland, ME  04106.
