Evelyn Howard

Evelyn Elaine Howard, 84, peacefully passed away just before dawn on Monday, Nov. 2, 2015 in Colorado Springs, State of Color.

She was born on July 2, 1931 in Kingman, Kansas. Evelyn was a warm, gracious and social woman who touched many over the years, and will be missed greatly.

Music was both a lifelong passion as well as the foundation for Evelyn’s professional career. Evelyn taught music in public schools around the United States, as well as overseas in Japan for several years as a young adult. Additionally, she taught private piano lessons, as well as directed several church choirs. She was a strong supporter of the local music scene wherever she resided, attending area symphony and choral concerts as often as she could.

It was while teaching in Japan when she met her future husband, the Rev. Robert L. Howard, who was born and raised in Bridgton, the youngest son of longtime residents Lewis and Ruth Howard (both deceased).

Married in 1965, the Howards were together in loving union for nearly 50 years, living in Kingston, N.H., Thomaston and Hampden, Sterling, Colo. (all places where Mr. Howard served a local UCC/Congregational church), eventually retiring to Colorado Springs Colo., where the two resided for nearly two decades.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her father, Calvin A. Brown; mother, Ruby L. Brown (Seward) of Cheney, Kansas; and older brother Robert Brown, formerly of Hillsboro, Kansas.

She is survived by two siblings, her 87-year-old eldest brother, William Brown of Cheney, Kansas and 83-year-old younger sister, Ellen Brown of Colorado Springs; as well as her husband Robert, and only child, son Jeremy Ian Howard (45), also from Colorado Springs.

A service of remembrance and reception to follow will be both held at Mrs. Howard’s longtime house of worship, The First Congregational Church of Colorado Springs, located at 20 East Saint Vrain Street, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Colorado Springs Symphony or any local nonprofit music group of the donor’s choosing.
