BRIDGTON — Elsie M. Mowatt, 92, a lifelong resident of Bridgton, died peacefully in the comfort of her own home on Tuesday morning, Sept. 15, 2015.

She was born in Bridgton on Nov. 18, 1922, a daughter of Charlie F. and Ruth P. (Smith) Robbins Sr. She attended local schools, graduating from Bridgton High School.

In June of 1941, she married Gordon F. Mowatt in Bridgton, where they made their home and she worked locally.

Ever the ardent worker, Elsie worked as a young woman at the Woolen Mill in Bridgton and later at the Bridgton Knitting Mill, as well as at Pleasant Mt. Moc. She worked at various local stores as well as owning a small market in town, along with owning and operating the Pondicherry Lanes bowling alley with her husband, Gordon. She drove a school bus for S.A.D. 61 in the 1970s, and later retired from the Bridgton Hospital, where she worked in the outpatient department.

She was Past President of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, crossword puzzles, going out to eat with family and friends, and watching harness racing at the fair.

Elsie was loved by her children, Timothy Mowatt and his wife Diane of North Windham, Eric Mowatt and his fiancée, Liz Cote of Denmark, Wanda Phillips of East Baldwin, and Linda Collins of Bridgton; brothers, Charles Robbins of Albany, N.H., and Donald Croake of Greenwich, Conn.; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren “on the way.”

Elsie was predeceased by her husband Gordon on April 1, 2004; a daughter Sharon Mowatt in 2007; and a brother Edward Croake.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, at the Forest Hills Annex Cemetery in Bridgton. Her family encourages gifts be made in her memory to a local charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of the Chandler Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 8 Elm St., Bridgton.
