SCARBOROUGH — Edward F. “Ed” Clout, 93, of Lovell, Maine, passed peacefully on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough.

Ed was born Edward Frederick Clout on Sept. 10, 1925, in Lindenhurst, N.Y. He was the son of George and Alice Clout. Edward was preceded in death by his three siblings, George, Peg and Harry. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Audrey, who passed away in Jan. of 2017. Edward is survived by his three children, Stephen, Michael and Susan. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Eric, Ryan, Diana, Danielle and Jason; and seven great-grandchildren, Olivia, Eric, Sophia, Jamie, Hudson, Zander and Ava.

Edward served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded while stationed in Germany. Upon his return to the states, and with his GI Bill in hand, Ed enrolled in the Physical Education Teacher Program at Cortland State College in N.Y. During college he excelled in basketball.

After graduation he obtained a teaching position at White Plains Mental Hospital in N.Y. It was here that he met and fell in love with his co-worker, Audrey Thorn. The couple married in 1951 and moved to the south shore of Long Island to raise their family. Edward taught elementary school for 31 years in Hempstead, N.Y.

Ed, like his father, was a lifelong Mason and a member of Amityville, N.Y. Lodge No. 977. While on the island, the family enjoyed many years boating on the Great South Bay. Ed and Aud retired to the lake house in Maine that was built in 1969 by Ed and his family. They lived out their retirement years playing golf. Ed went with Audrey a couple of times on her adventures around the world. He particularly enjoyed Africa.

Edward’s ashes will be spread in a private family ceremony. His life will be celebrated on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Lovell United Church of Christ, time to be announced. Arrangements are under the care of Wood Funeral Home, 9 Warren St., Fryeburg.
