Dorothy E. Robinson

SOUTH PORTLAND — Dorothy “Dot” E. Robinson, a lifetime resident of South Portland, passed away on Jan. 7, 2011, in her 100th year of life.
The daughter of Stanley and Lillian E. Cheney, she was born on Dec. 17, 1911, in Portland. Dot married her high school sweetheart, George E. Robinson, on Nov. 11, 1937, and they were together 59 years until George’s death in February 1991.

After graduating from South Portland High School in 1930, Dot became one of the original employees of Jordan’s Meats. Dot and George were members of the Officer’s Club at Fort Williams and actively involved in the Shriner’s Kora Temple. In 1960, Dot and George co-founded Circus Time Potato Chips along with his sister Belle and her husband John Graney. They retired in 1977 to spend their time traveling and relaxing with family and friends at their camp on Long Lake in Bridgton.

Dot was a longtime member of Down East Ski Club and one of the first skiers at Pleasant Mountain. Dot could be found most winter weekends schussing the slopes of Shawnee Peak with her friends Lois Swindells, Fern Michaud, and Gladys Elkins along with family and other friends.

Dot was well known for her stylish wardrobe and flair for fashion, her dedication to and love for her family and friends. In recent years, Dot’s greatest joy came from spending time with her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. When asked her secret to longevity, her answer was “red wine and peanuts.”

Dot was predeceased by her parents; husband George; and brother Donald Cheney.

She is lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Suzanne Anderson of South Portland and Sherry Snow of Pownal; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a large extended family.

A funeral service will be held this Friday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m., at Hobbs Funeral Home on Cottage Road in South Portland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dot’s honor to: The Shawnee Peak Adaptive Ski Program, care of Ross Graham, Shawnee Peak, 119 Mountain Road, Bridgton, ME 04009.
