Father Normand Carpentier

AUBURN — Father Normand E. Carpentier, 71, of Auburn, died Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Born in Quantico, Va., on April 5, 1945, he was the son of Charles E. and Adrienne Lajoie Carpentier.

Educated at Holy Cross and St. Louis grammar schools, he attended high school at the Sherbrooke Seminary in Sherbrooke, P.Q., Canada, and received a Master of Divinity degree from St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, Md. On May 29, 1971, Father Carpentier was ordained by the Most Reverend Edward C. O’Leary at St. Louis Parish in Auburn. Over the years, he was assigned to several parishes in the Diocese of Portland, including Holy Rosary in Caribou, St. Thomas Aquinas in Madawaska, St. Ignatius in Sanford, Holy Family in Lewiston, St. James in Woodland, St. Ann Mission in Princeton, Sacred Heart in Portland, the Institutional Chaplaincy Program for the Diocese of Portland, St. John the Baptist in Winslow, Holy Cross Parish in Lewiston, St. Margaret’s in Old Orchard Beach, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Windham, St. Joseph Parish and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Mission in Bridgton and Fryeburg, All Saints in Bath, and he also served five-year terms on the Diocesan Review Board and the Priests’ Personnel Board. He retired on July 1, 2015.

An avid reader, he also loved music of all kinds, and had an extensive and diverse collection of CDs. He enjoyed playing board games and cards, especially cribbage, with his family, friends, and fellow priests.

Survivors include two brothers, Paul and Frederick, both of Auburn; three sisters, Carmen White of Auburn, Marian Cote of Topsham, and Denise Burke of Auburn; a niece and nine nephews.

Visitation will be held Thursday, 3 to 7 p.m., beginning with the reception of the body, at Holy Family Church in Lewiston, and again on Friday morning from 9 to 10:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Lewiston.
