Madelyn E. Buck, 97

Madelyn Buck

HARRISON — Madelyn Elizabeth Buck, 97, of Harrison, passed away Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, at the Bridgton Health Care Center in Bridgton.

Madelyn was born on May 23, 1919, on the family farm in Harrison, a daughter of Leland S. and Blanche H. (Haskell) Buck Sr. It was at that family farm, where she was not only raised, but lived later on life during her retirement.
She was educated in local schools and was salutatorian of her class at Bridgton Academy in 1937. After B.A., she earned her teaching certificate from the Gorham Normal School, now called the University of Southern Maine. She later earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Maine and a master’s degree from Columbia.
Her teaching career included several memorable opportunities, from teaching her younger sisters Myrna and Muriel in a one-room schoolhouse to tutoring wealthy businessmen’s children in Venezuela. She spent most of her career in Falmouth, where she had the opportunity to teach upper-level English to students who went on to excel in the Ivy League and other excellent schools. She retired in 1982 to help her aging parents on their farm, and she remained active in her church, the community, and the Historical Society for over thirty years, well past her ninetieth birthday.

Madelyn is survived by three sisters, Miriam, Myrna and Muriel, as well as by a dozen nieces and nephews and their many, many children.
