Barbara H. Hughes, 85

GORHAM — Barbara Harriet Hughes, 85, died on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, at her home.

She was born in Pleasant Point, on June 8, 1930, the daughter of Peter and Ruth (McMahan) Moore. Barbara grew up on the Passamaquoddy Reservation in Pleasant Point until she was 14, when she moved to South Portland. Late in life, she moved to Gorham with her children.

Barbara was a “jack of all trades,” working in a car wash, as a janitor for Deering High School, building Burnham pool tables, and being the primary woodchopper at her home. Barbara developed impressive biceps, which she was flexing this past summer for all who cared to see. She could do just about anything, but being a mother and a caregiver to all was her primary focus. Barbara enjoyed word searches to keep her mind sharp, and playing just about any card game or game of chance. She taught her children and grandchildren how to count and to think several steps ahead via poker, rummy and Parcheesi. Recently, she liked to watch the humming birds outside her window.

Barbara is survived by her son, Ernest Jr. of Gorham; daughters, Patricia Ann Clement of North Sebago and Ruth Elizabeth Dow of Portland; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ernest Hughes Sr.; brothers, Peter, Tony and Daniel; and sisters, Gloria, Mary Ruth (Snowball) and Mary Alice (Rosebud).

A celebration of her life was held at 1 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 44 Sebago Lake Road, Gorham. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland, will be at a later date. Arrangements by the Dolby and Dorr Funeral Chapel, Gorham. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com
