PORTLAND — Richard L. Engelhardt, 77, of Portland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at the Barron Center, following a long illness.

He was born on Feb. 13, 1937, the son of the late Nora and Frederick Engelhardt. He was raised in South Portland, where he graduated from South Portland High School in 1955.

On July 5, 1958, he married the love of his life, Linda Charron. They moved to Westbrook, where together they raised their six children.

Richard served for four years in the National Guard in South Portland and was employed by Nissen’s Bakery, where he retired after 35 years.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, singing in the church chorus, gardening, woodworking, as well as many other hobbies.

He considered himself to be a layman minister and was always eager to share his genuine Christian faith.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Susan Richard; and a brother, Ronald Engelhardt.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda; his daughter Karen Rand of Somerville, Mass.; son Daniel Engelhardt of Scarborough; daughter Laurie Perham of Naples; daughter Sherry Rainsford of Raymond; son Roy Engelhardt of Port Charlotte, Fla.; his brothers Robert Engelhardt of Pittsfield and Roger Engelhardt of Plymouth; sister Dawna Frost of Chattanooga, Tenn.; as well as nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A church service and celebration of life was held at Life Church, 8 Elkins Road, in Gorham on Saturday, March 15, 2014.
