Joan B. Westerberg, 76

LOVELL — Joan B. Westerberg, 76, of Lovell, Maine and Marblehead, Mass., died at her Lovell home on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, from lung cancer.

Born in Binghamton, N.Y., Mrs. Westerberg graduated from the Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., attended Skidmore College and was awarded a B.S. degree from the Columbia University School of Occupational Therapy. Two years after receiving her degree, in 1962, Mrs. Westerberg started the Occupational Therapy program at the Northern Westchester Hospital, Mount Kisco, N.Y. The program began with one volunteer assistant, a grocery shopping cart and assorted fabrics donated from local businesses. Soon thereafter, Mrs. Westerberg was awarded the title of Director. Today, the Occupational Therapy Department includes inpatient and outpatient services and three full-time therapists.

In 1964, Mrs. Westerberg moved with her husband, The Reverend George Westerberg, to Maine, where she would begin a life of Christian service in the Episcopal Churches of St. George, York Harbor, and St. David, Kennebunk. Four and a half years later they would move to Marblehead, Mass., where she served until their retirement, thirty years later.

A woman of few personal wants, Mrs. Westerberg enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, which included her family, friends, children, and grandchildren, flowers, pets, lots of humor and a large measure of generosity. Using her wealth of creative skills, kindness and compassion, it can be said that she did all things well. In the biblical vernacular, she personally fed the hungry, gave drink to the thirsty, took in the stranger, clothed the naked, visited the sick and those in prison.

Mrs. Westerberg leaves her husband, George, of fifty years; daughter Gretchen Turner of Swampscott, Mass.; sons Eric and Carl of Fryeburg; and six grandchildren: Michaela, Matthew, Gillian and Benjamin of Swampscott, Mass.; and Daniel and Jordan of Fryeburg. She is also survived by her four siblings, Dr. Peter Weigl of Winston Salem, N.C., Dr. Robert Weigl of Alexandria, Va.; Nancy Sprague of Blue Hill and Cornelia Weigl of Winston Salem, N.C.

A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, 26 Pleasant St., Marblehead, Mass. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery on the following Monday.

Visiting hours will be held at the Wood Funeral Home, 9 Warren Street., Fryeburg, Maine on Thursday, Oct. 3rd from 4 to 8 p.m., and at St. Michael's Church, Marblehead, Mass., on Friday, Oct. 4th from 4 to 8 p.m.
