LEWISTON — Martha Hennigar, 77, died peacefully at the St. Margarite D’Youville Nursing Home in Lewiston on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She was the daughter of Jerold and Dorothy Vickerson of Winthrop, Mass. She has two brothers, Jerold Vickerson of Winthrop and Thomas Vickerson of Albany, N.Y. and a sister, Ann Thornell of Marco Island, Fla.

She attended Winthrop, Mass. schools and earned her R.N. at Salem School of Nursing.

Fifty-seven years ago, she married the love of her life, Ronald Hennigar. Together, they raised five children, Carol Simmons of Bradenton, Fla., Eric Hennigar of Evanston, Wy., Stephen Hennigar of Rye, N.H., Janet Jordan of Buxton and Thomas “Buck” Hennigar of Texas. The children blessed them with one angel, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

As a young family, they lived in Atkinson, Chester and Derry, N.H. before moving to Sebago in 1973. Primarily a stay-at-home mom, she did work on the Sebago Rescue Unit. “Maude” was the heart and soul of a very busy family. While her children were in school, she loved attending various sports events — football, track & field, gymnastics and hockey. She was an enthusiastic fan and supporter of the Lake Region Boosters Club. She was a good marksman with a 22 rifle and competed in the Sebago turkey shoot events.

Before Alzheimer’s disease shortened their retirement, Martha and Ron enjoyed traveling by camper. They especially found pleasure in the State of Wyoming and began to split time between Evanston, Wy. And Sebago. She spent the last several years under the loving care of the St. Margarite D’Youville nursing staff. Her devoted husband Ron attended to her daily needs until her passing to heaven.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Activities Fund, St. Margarite D’Youville Nursing Home, 102 Campus Ave., Lewiston, ME 04240.
