Ellouise E. Plaisted

JAY — Ellouise Elizabeth Plaisted, 92, of Jay, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 13, at her home.

She was born on Aug. 27, 1918, in Madrid, the daughter of Clifford Henry and Alice Pearl (Barrett) Wing. At the age of 12, she was adopted by Leslie and Mildred (Davenport) Hardy. Ellouise attended Madrid and Phillips schools graduating from Phillips High School in 1935.

On July 2, 1935, she married Henry Albra Plaisted at the Bean’s Corner Baptist Church parsonage in Wilton. They made their home in Jay and she worked at the Wilton Woolen Mill in the cafeteria for a year and a half. She then worked at Norwalk Shoe in North Jay as a heel padder, retiring at the age of 55.

Ellouise was a member of the local Farm Bureau, the North Jay United Methodist Church, where she also was active with the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed knitting many various articles of clothing that she sold from her home and at work.

She was also very proud of her genealogy as she was a direct descendent of Maj. Gen. Daniel Gookin of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her roots were also tied to the famous Rangeley Barrett Boat, which various past presidents used in their fishing trips to the Rangeley Lakes region, as she was the granddaughter of Thomas Hale Barrett.

She is survived by her children, Madeline Plaisted McTague, of Berlin, Mass., Virginia Phyllis Plaisted Moulton, of Jay, Walter Plaisted of Jay and Robert Leslie Plaisted, of Bridgton; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Alba Plaisted on April 2, 1988; a brother, Wendell “Bud” Wing; three sisters, Maxine, Phyllis and Madeline; and a half brother, Clifford Henry Wing Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, at the North Jay United Methodist Church in North Jay with the Reverend Doris Morgan officiating. Family and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 16, at the Wiles Remembrance Center, 308 Franklin Road, Route 133, Jay.
