WELLS — William Wurts White Jr., of Wells, died on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016. Bill was born in 1933 in Providence, R.I., the son of William and Lilla (Sammis) White. He graduated from St. Mark’s School, Southboro, Mass., and Yale University, New Haven, Conn.

Upon graduation, Bill entered the Air Force as an officer and served in Texas, Oklahoma and Japan. He then worked in Providence, R.I. as a reporter with the Providence Journal and Evening Bulletin. In 1960, Bill married Beatrice de Blonay, and they moved to San Francisco, where Bill worked as a personnel officer at Wells Fargo Bank. While living in California their three children were born.

After returning to R.I., Bill became director of development and public relations at Roger Williams College in Bristol. In 1970 he became business manager and director of development for Bridgton Academy in North Bridgton. While there he received the Ray J. McDonald Jr. Distinguished Service Award, and in 2012 was inducted into the Hall of Fame. After retiring in 1990, Bill was self-employed as a consultant helping various nonprofit local organizations such as the Lakes Environmental Association.

Bill loved his family and friends, living in Maine, his home on Moose Pond, tennis, skiing, travel, photography, swimming, boating and ice skating on the lake. Active in the Bridgton community, Bill served as trustee of N.C.M.H. (now the Bridgton Hospital) and in 1978 was co-chair with Beatrice of its capital funds drive, which resulted in a new patient wing and reorganized hospital space. In 1980 they established a scholarship fund at Bridgton Academy in their names and they worked together on the town revitalization committee. Bill was treasurer and a trustee of the Sebago-Long Lake Chamber Music Festival, chair of the town investment committee, an incorporator of the Norway Savings Bank and Senior Warden of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Bill was predeceased by his sister, Sarah White Coates.

Bill is survived by his wife, Beatrice; his son, William W. White III and wife, Nancy, of Hanover; his daughters, Anna White Hanson and husband, Lance, of Hotschkiss, Colo., and Lucy White and husband, Ed Momm of Portsmouth, N.H.; four grandchildren, Evan Rowland Hanson (wife, Nicole), Hadley White Hanson, Acadia Elizabeth Momm-White, and Jackson Edward Momm-White; his sister, Lilla White Woodhouse of Little Compton, R.I.; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 138 York Street, Kennebunk, Maine. Burial will be held at a later date.
