SKOWHEGAN — Ruth Vivian Vermette, 83, of Skowhegan, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, peacefully at home in Skowhegan, after a short illness, surrounded by family and friends.
Ruth was the beloved wife of Gerald E. Vermette, and the loving daughter of Leona and Arthur Ouillette of Caribou. She was born on May 7, 1931, in Caribou,
Ruth attended the University of Maine in Gorham and graduated in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in education. She remained an active alumnus and helped with planning many class reunions.
During her career, Ruth enjoyed teaching both church and public school in Silver Spring, Md., Columbus, Ga., and Skowhegan. Ruth was active in her church, with Girl Scouts, with the Skowhegan choral group, the Cursillo Movement, and RCIA.
After the children had left home, Ruth worked in Gerald’s dental office for many years where her specialty was working with people who needed myofunctional therapy. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her brother, Rev. Arthur J. Ouillette of Massachusetts; her sister, Joyce Theriault.
She is survived by siblings Kathleen Karr of California, Richard Ouillette of Caribou, Reginald Ouillette of Caribou, Greta Cianchette Jr. of Detroit, Mona MacBain of Clinton, Conn., and Sheila Jacobson of Raymond; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Gerald, Ruth is survived by her children, Jean of Bangor, Michael of Saint Albans, Mary of Ashville, N.C., David of Bingham, Peter of Scarborough, Danielle of Toronto, Canada; and her four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014, at 10 a.m., at the Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Water Street, Skowhegan. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
