Robert C. Jewell

SOUTH PARIS — Robert Charles Jewell, 83, of South Paris, died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Jan. 8, 2011.

Robert was born on Nov. 14, 1927, in Norway, the son of Howard Jewell and Doris Merrill. He was educated in Paris and served active duty in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On April 19, 1952, Bob married Georgette Langlais of Lewiston.

Beginning in 1957, they owned and operated Market Square Shell station in South Paris and Porter Tire in Norway. In 1964, they moved the retread shop of Porter Tire to the old Pickle shop located on Western Avenue in South Paris, renaming it Jewell Tire, and eventually sold the Shell station.

Around 1972, Bob and Georgette sold Jewell Tire to Noyes Tire, where Bob worked as store manager for the next 10 years. Bob resigned from Noyes Tire in 1982, and reopened Jewell Tire on Route 26 in South Paris, which is still in business today and operated by Georgette and two of his sons, Robert C. Jewell II and Jeffrey A. Jewell.

Bob enjoyed trains, of which he had a collection. He also enjoyed camping, traveling, and spending winters in Florida, and time with family and friends.
Bob is survived by his wife of 58 years, Georgette; his sister, Virginia Bean; four sons, Robert Charles II of South Paris, William Craig of Charlotte, N.C., Jeffrey Allen of Waterford and Stephen Ashley of San Antonio, Texas; a foster daughter, Debbie Reynolds Jack of Oxford; 13 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Bob will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 22, at Oxford Hills and Weston Funeral Services, 1037 Main Street, Route 26, Oxford. Family and friends are encouraged to join at 10:30 a.m. for a celebration of life, followed by a formal service at 11:30 a.m.
