Peter E. Humphrey, 78

CORNISH — Peter E. Humphrey, 78, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018, surrounded by his loving family after many years of battling cancer at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough.

Peter was born in Burlington, Vt., on Feb. 27, 1940 and was the son of Harold and Marguerite (Merchant) Humphrey. They moved to Maine when Peter was a young child. He was educated in Cornish schools. Peter worked for Cyro Industries in Sanford for over 30 years. He had a nearly perfect attendance only having missed one day. Peter received an Award of Excellence due to his work ethic at a special ceremony in New York City!

Peter married his teenage love, Linda Evans, in 1957. They were married for 61 years on Aug. 22. Together, they had five children and were blessed with many grandchildren whom he adored.

He loved baseball and coached Babe Ruth teams for several years. He loved watching the Red Sox and the Patriots, but his true love was watching his children and grandchildren play whatever sport was in season. He was a true family man and always put everyone else’s needs before his own. Recently, he was asked what accomplishment he was most proud of in his life, he replied “my family.” He loved working in his garden, feeding the birds and was always happy to see the orioles and humming birds return each spring. Peter loved long rides through the mountains and to the ocean with a special fondness of Fort Williams and enjoyed picnics along the way. He had the best sense of humor and his dry wit will be missed.

He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Marguerite; four siblings, Harold, Charlie, Mary and Tissie; and his granddaughter.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Linda Evans Humphrey; his sons, Peter L. Humphrey of Cornish, Mark E. Humphrey of Lisbon Falls, Shawn H. Humphrey of Standish and Todd W. Humphrey of Fryeburg; daughter, Heidi Humphrey Cates of Cornish; and his 12 grandchildren.

At his request, there will be no funeral service. A graveside service will be held in the spring.
