CASCO — Merton E. Thorpe, 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 22, 2016.

Merton was born Nov. 7, 1922, in Raymond, to Merle and Eva Cole Thorpe at the family farm. Logging and farming became an integral part of Merton's life. He continued to work with oxen until his eighties. His gardens produced a bountiful yield, which he happily shared with others.

For most of his life Merton worked in road construction and maintenance. A special joy for Merton came late in life when he found salvation through Christ. He enjoyed most traditional hymns and Bible verses. He will best be remembered for his gifts of kindness and generosity. Merton's family is grateful to Dr. Carl Schuler and devoted caregivers of the Casco Inn for their loving care.

Merton is survived by Elwin and Gerri Thorpe of Casco; Arthur and Donna Thorpe of Summerfield, Fla.; Charles and Marlene Thorpe of Leesburg, Fla.; Clint Thorpe of Harrison; Crystal and Will Gwyn of Portland, Ore.; Terry Thorpe of Summerfield, Fla.; Tammy Wooley of Summerfield, Fla.; Regina and Michael Baptista of Fryeburg; Carrie Soule of Windham; Ryan and Beth Thorpe of Goldbar, Wash.; Brandi and David Jackson of Newton, Kans.; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 27, at Hall Funeral Home, 165 Quaker Ridge Rd., Casco. A service to celebrate his rich life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 28 at Riverside Cemetery on Plains Rd. in Raymond.
