YARMOUTH — Mary 'Liz' Elizabeth Fitts Thurston, 87, of Yarmouth, died on Nov. 15, 2010, in Yarmouth.

She was born in Baldwin, on May 15, 1923, to Mary (Norton) and Harland Black. She was educated in Baldwin schools and graduated from New Gloucester High School, Class of 1941.

In late 1941, Liz married Lester Fitts and together they had four children. They made their home in Yarmouth and she dedicated herself to caring for her family as a homemaker. She belonged to a knitting club for many years. Les died in January 1978. In late 1978, Liz married Elwood 'Al' Thurston and they continued to live in Yarmouth until his death in February 2000.

Liz is survived by his sons, Earl Fitts of California, Ronald Fitts of Virginia and John Fitts of North Windham; her daughter, Janice Gilliam of Windham; her stepdaughter, Betty Thurston of New Gloucester; seven grandchildren, as well as 13 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be on Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, with the funeral service also at the funeral home on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Ric Ochsner officiating. Burial will follow in West Baldwin Cemetery.
