Laurence Haley

SOUTH PORTLAND — Laurence F. “Larry” Haley, 84, of South Portland, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017.

He was born in Portland on Sept. 29, 1932. He was the son of the late Harold F. and Helen (Locke) Haley of Fryeburg.

Larry spent the bulk of his childhood in Fryeburg, before moving to the greater Portland area as an adult. He married Margaret Petersen on Sept. 23, 1955.

Larry worked a variety of jobs over his lifetime. He finally retired from Filene’s in 1994, where he worked in the maintenance department.

He was a very kind and gentle man, who enjoyed his family and his retirement. He loved spending time at family events, telling stories and cracking jokes. He liked watching the Yankees and the Patriots with equal enthusiasm. He was an avid lottery player, who on occasion actually won. One of his greatest pleasures was the sugar rush he got from consuming an endless stream of pastries. Cakes, whoopee pies and especially Oreo’s by the truckload. Larry’s greatest joy was his wife of 61 years, Peggy. She was the absolute love of his life.

Larry is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Haley of South Portland; son Mark Haley of Parsonsfield; daughter Jennifer Haley of Freeport; as well as a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren; nieces and cousins.

He is predeceased by his sister, Louise Parsons; and two grandsons.

A graveside service is planned for the spring.
