John A. Purdy Sr.

RAYMOND — John “Jack” A. Purdy, Sr., 72, of Raymond, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 in the comfort of his own home.

He was born on July 7, 1939 in Houlton, to Elden and Reta (Drolet) Purdy. He attended Houlton and Calais schools and was a highly-decorated swimming medalist. His family moved to South Portland, where Jack played football for the Red Riots and helped bring them to numerous victories during his junior and senior high school years. He graduated in 1959.

Jack married Leona Boutwell, a beautiful redhead, and his beloved on April 6, 1968.

He had various jobs early on, but finally settled on a career at The Maine Youth Center. He was a counselor and a control room operator until his retirement in 1998 after 34 years of service. After his retirement, he and his wife Leona took numerous trips across the United States, determined to see as many states as they could. They often enjoyed weekends in New York state with close friends, Tom and Judy Dippert.

Mr. Purdy was well known in his family for cooking several specialty dishes, but unforgettable were his baked beans. He was a great gardener and enjoyed his vegetable gardens and flowers. He enjoyed many things in life. He was a fun and fearlessly protective father who enjoyed many years of seasonal hunting in Macwahoc with his two sons and friends. He and his family were longtime seasonal campers at K’s Family Circle Campground. He was an avid bowler and played on leagues at the Big 20 bowling alley. Jack was also a member of the Masons, Hiram Lodge in South Portland. He will be greatly missed.

Predeceasing him were his parents; his first wife, Nancy; and his brother, Robert Purdy.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Leona; his sons John Jr. of Hollis and Brian of Buxton; four grandchildren.
At Jack’s request, there will be no visiting hours. Memorial service will be private. Arrangements are by the Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to: The Animal Refuge League, P.O. Box 336, Westbrook, ME 04098.
