WINDHAM — Jacqueline Mary Herbert, 85, of Windham, died peacefully on Friday, April 17, 2015, in Portland.

Jacky was born in Rumford on June 1, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mildred (Caruthers) Herbert. She attended Rumford schools, including Stephens High School. For many years, Jackie worked for WLBZ as a weather lady, on the show Dance Party, and on Romper Room, where she was affectionately known to many Maine children as “Miss Jackie.”

Following her time at WLBZ, Jacky became the sales manager of the Sheraton Hotel in Portland. Eventually, she founded her own business as a travel agent, running “Jacky Herbert Travel” until her retirement. Of course, Jacky enjoyed traveling and being outdoors, running and biking.

She spent much of her time volunteering for various organizations over the years, but had a special fondness for the American Lung Association .

She later moved to Port Charlotte, Fla., along with her husband Francis, where she remained active and outgoing.

Jacky was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. When she walked in, her smile was said to light up a room. She will be dearly missed by her loving family and by the many cherished friends she made over the years.

Predeceasing Jacky are her parents; and her brother, Joseph Herbert.

Jacky is survived by her children, Robyn Leavitt of Canaan, Stephen Leavitt of Woodbine, Md., Leigh Quinn of Westbrook, Jacky Swindler of Raymond, Lisa Bilodeau of Lewiston, Wendy Ohlsen of Allentown, Pa., Coreen Lauren of Portland, E. Erin Pasquali of Cape Coral, Fla., Shawna LaPierre of Westbrook, Judy Webster of Portland, and Biff Herbert of Peaks Island; a brother, Allan Herbert of West Chester, Pa.; 30 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three nephews.

Visitation was held Monday, April 27 at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, April 28, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland, with Monsignor Paul Stefanko presiding.

Care for Jacky and her family has been entrusted to the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home of Portland.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the American Lung Association of Maine.
