Herbert Benson, 85

BROWNFIELD — Herbert “Herb” Benson, 85, of San Mateo, Calif., passed away peacefully with family at his side on June 25, 2013.

Herb was born on Sept. 23, 1927 in Boston, Mass. He moved to Brownfield as a young boy, where he grew up and graduated high school. He later went on to the University of Maine in Brunswick and decided to join the Navy. He returned home from the Navy and then went on to serve in the United States Army. He then met his wife of 16 years, and had three children, whom he was very proud of. He enjoyed skiing, gardening and loved boating with family and friends on the Delta in northern California. This is where he spent his happiest days during his retirement from his 36-year career at United Air Lines as a maintenance foreman in San Francisco.

Later in life, Herb became interested in the Brownfield Historical Society and was encouraged by his very good friend, Norma. On his last trip to visit Maine, Herb spent some time in the Brownfield area and visited all his old stomping grounds and loved to tell his stories about his younger years.

Herb was predeceased by sisters, June Lowe of Florida and Marion Lowe York of Brownfield.

He leaves behind sisters, Doris Benson Bell, Roberta Lowe Watson and Donna Lowe Buschow of Colorado; his daughters, Linda Benson DiBernardi and Suzanne Benson Sweetser; a son, David Benson; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

The family held private memorial services in San Mateo, Calif. on Sept. 22.
