Doris M. Sandell, 88

 

RAYMOND — Doris M. Sandell, 88, of Raymond, passed away at Seaside Healthcare Center with Beacon Hospice attending on Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, due to complications from melanoma.

Doris was born on June 2, 1928, in Albany, the daughter of Clarence H. and Adelia A. Waterhouse. She was mostly raised and educated in Maine.

Doris married Ormond Halvor Sandell on Aug. 30, 1947. They raised three children in a military family, as Ormond served 27 years in the Navy. Doris obtained office work at each deployment; however, with retirement from military life and a move back to Maine, she changed careers. She first became an LPN; then attended Westbrook College for her RN, and finally USM for a bachelor’s degree in social work. Doris was employed as a nurse at Maine Medical Center, Bridgton Healthcare Center, and The Barron Center.

Doris had a lifetime interest in travel and genealogy. She made numerous trips to Las Vegas and loved the Oxford Casino. She traveled extensively in Europe, as well as to the Canary Islands, Bahamas, Mexico and South America. She was a lifetime member of the Bethel Historical Society and for several years was the membership chair for the Isaac Cummings Family Association.

Doris was predeceased by her husband Ormond (1991); two sons, Brian (2002) and Gary (2015).

She is survived by her daughter, Darla S. Jarvis; her granddaughter, Sarah Powelson Nathan; two brothers, Donald and Richard; several nieces and nephews.

Doris helped to write her own obituary, upon hearing the news of her prognosis. The next day, she said, “I awoke with a few pithy comments to add, but now I just can’t remember them.”

Graveside services will be held at Hunt’s Corner Cemetery in Albany on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 4 p.m. Dinner will follow at Market Square Restaurant in South Paris. Arrangements are under the care of Oxford Hills Funeral Services, 1037 Main Street, Oxford.
