Daniel W. Dors, 81

HARRISON – Daniel Walter Dors, 81, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, Jan. 29, 2018.

Born in Brockton, Mass., on June 11, 1936, Daniel was the only child of Alfred and Helen (Tissetore) Dors. He attended and graduated from the Brockton school system in 1955; he received a Bachelor of Science from Murray State University (Kentucky) in 1964, earning a triple major in Physical Education, Health, and History.

On August 26, 1961, Daniel married Janice Diane Minsk, of Brockton, at St. Coleman’s Church. After a honeymoon to Niagara Falls, Canada, they settled in Brockton and started their family. In 1968, they moved to East Bridgewater, Mass., where they raised their family. In 1993, Daniel and his wife moved to Harrison, Maine, into a home which they designed.

Mr. Dors taught Physical Education at East Junior High School, in Brockton, for 29 years, before retiring in 1993. During his years in Brockton, he coached Little League Baseball (winning the city championship in 1964); he was the East Junior High School baseball and basketball coach; he was an assistant football coach at both Cardinal Spellman Catholic High School and Brockton High School (winning the state title in 1972). After retiring from full-time teaching, Mr. Dors became a substitute teacher in the East Bridgewater school district, where he also coached cross-country, track and field, and girls’ JV basketball. After relocating to Maine, Mr. Dors continued teaching and coaching; he was a substitute teacher in the Lake Region School District, the current cross-country coach, and former indoor/outdoor track and field coach at Lake Region High School. Mr. Dors was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus (Council 5254 – Abington, Mass.), and a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (Local 653 - Brockton, Mass.). He proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Mr. Dors was an avid golfer and a member at clubs in both Massachusetts and Maine; he was a former Club Champion at Wedgewood Country Club (Brockton). He was an avid historian and self-proclaimed expert on WWII, amassing a library of over 200 books and DVDs on the subject.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling along the eastern coast of the United States and into Canada, and they were particularly fond of Lancaster County, Penn.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Dors was predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years, Janice. He is survived by his daughters, Terri Chizmar, and her husband Mark, of Lewiston, and Cathy DeSouza, of Sebago. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Samantha DeSouza, and Daniel and Joseph Chizmar. Interment will be held later this spring. A notice of burial will be forthcoming and all are invited.
