Beverly A. Smith, 74

CASCO — Beverly A. Smith, 74, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2015 in Lewiston.

Born on July 15, 1940, she was raised near Phoenixville, Penn., where she graduated from Spring-Ford High School after starring on the basketball and softball teams. She graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan and attained her master’s degree at Ohio University. After teaching two years at Ohio University, she moved to California to teach for the next 28 years at San Diego State University in the department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences. She successfully coached field hockey, basketball and softball teams at SDSU, winning many championship titles. She was well liked by her students, who routinely commented on her ability to teach a methods class that “required you to think, and work hard to fully understand the activity that they would one day be teaching.”

She retired in 1996 and landed in Casco the following day. She came to the Naples area as a high school junior in 1959 to work as a counselor at Camp Wenonah, where she fell in love with the area. Almost every summer for the next 35 years, she would come to Maine to either work or spend the summer camping and touring the New England landscape. Prior to her retirement, she bought a house in Casco and after moving to Maine continued to be involved with improving the environment by working with the Lake Monitoring Program.

She attended both the Minot Methodist Church and the Naples Methodist Church, where she volunteered to work their food pantry program.

She will be missed by both family and friends.

At Beverly’s request, there are no services planned. Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Casco.
