Sport shorts: Quinn wins 3-point contest at McDonald’s All-Star game

ALL STARS — Fryeburg Academy seniors Lexi L’Heureux-Carland and Julia Quinn were selected to play in the annual McDonald’s Senior All-Star basketball game at Husson University in Bangor this past Saturday, March 12. Julia won the Maine Athletic Fundraising 3-Point Shooting Competition, topping Dominique Lewis of Lawrence High School in a 15-second shoot-off. Both players made nine baskets in the first round when contestants had one minute to shoot from five positions with a total of 25 balls. In the Class AA/A/B game, the South stars defeated the North 86-69.

Matthew Buchanan of Naples, a member of the Fryeburg Academy/Lake Region/Oxford Hills varsity ice hockey team has been named one of 37 boy recipients of the Hobey Baker 2016 High School Character Award. The honor goes to players who have shown exemplary character and sportsmanship. There were 15 girl recipients.

Jack Lesure was a member of the Class AA/A/B South team at the Maine McDonald’s High School All-Star basketball game held over the weekend at Husson University in Bangor. The South lost to the North all-stars 97-91.

Kate Hall of Casco, a freshman at Iowa State, placed 12th in the long jump at the Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships held in Birmingham, Ala. Ranked fifth heading into the championships with a 21-foot, 5 ½-inch mark, Kate’s best jump was 20-feet, 1-inch. The top nine moved on to the meet Finals.
