GORHAM — Coach Kevin McDonald would love to “fill the bus” when it comes time to go to the Indoor Track & Field State Meet at Bates College next month.

Several Fryeburg Academy athletes appear to be putting themselves in position to land a seat on the bus.

In action last Friday at the University of Southern Maine field house in Gorham, the Raider boys finished second out of eight schools with 116 points, while the FA girls finished fifth with 62 points.

Skye Collins continues to run very well winning both the 55m in 7.84 seconds and the 200m in 28.92.

Taylor Kruger dipped under 9 seconds in the 55m, placing eighth in 8.99.

“A great improvement by Taylor as she has been focused on her training and reaping the rewards,” Coach McDonald said. “Taylor also sings the national anthem at the home basketball games, so she is a busy young lady.”

Emily McDermith is becoming a force in the 400m. Em was the overall winner this past week running 1:05.90.

“As we move into the competition phase of our season, we look for the times to drop further,” the coach said.

The boys’ side saw many fine performances. The 55m junior division saw a 1, 3, 4 finish by Jeremiah Schrader (7.33), Max Kummer (7.40) and Spencer Thomas (7.45). Spencer also finished third in the 200m in 25.95 just missing the state standard.

While Miah and Max were running the 400m and came home with first and third finishes, the senior division also produced fine performances in the 55m and 200m. Eli Thompson took first place in both running a personal record in the 200m of 24.34.

“Eli has come around after some early season set backs and is getting hot at just the right time,” Coach McDonald said.

Stephen Lin and Tyler Wang also saw huge improvements in the 55m.

Xiaoyu Yang won both the high jump and the long jump setting a new school record in the latter of 19-feet 10.50-inches.

“This young man has been drawing a crowd when he competes. A student of the sport, Xiaoyu is a pleasure to work with,” Coach McDonald said.

Finishing second in the long jump was Liuke Yang, who has also jumped 19 plus this year. However, he was limited to one jump due to injury.

Donavan Brown competed in his first meet of the year and just missed the standard in the long jump. Also on the edge of going to States are Miah Schrader in the 400m, Baha Demir in the shot put, Spencer Thomas in the 200m and Orie Inirio in the 55m and the 200m.

“All these athletes very close to meeting the standards and with two meets left in the season anything is possible,” Coach McDonald said. “Coach Collins and I would love to fill that bus up for the trip to States (Feb. 16).”
