LOVELL — “Oh, what a race!”

Lovell Old Home Days 5K Race Director Stan Tupaj couldn’t have scripted a better Saturday.

Three-time defending champ Tim Even of Stoneham and state high school champion Silas Eastman of Chatham, N.H. produced a fantastic finish at the Lovell Athletic Fields. After running shoulder to shoulder through Lovell Village, Eastman turned the tables on Even.

A year ago, Even’s late burst produced his third Lovell title, finishing just 2 seconds ahead of Eastman.

This time, it was Eastman who had a little stronger kick, winning the race in commanding fashion at 16 minutes 29 seconds (a bit slower than a year ago at 16:21). Even was second in 16:47. The course record still belongs to David Hunt, set in 2006 at 16:10.

The number of runners in this year’s Lovell Old Home Days 5K was up 50% over last summer, Tupaj reported. In all, 150 athletes — ranging in age from 4 to 80 — started on Kimball Road and 150 crossed the finish line for a new race record.

Terry Ballou, 43, of New York City, after a one-year absence, was the top female finisher for the third time. Terry ran the course in 21:28, finishing 14th overall. She managed to edge out her sister, Cathleen Livingston, 45, of Intervale, N.H., who was last year’s first place female finisher. Livingston checked in 17th overall in 21:44.

Both Eastman and Ballou received awards designed by Conway glassblower, Nathan Macomber.
