Crooked River project passes

Crooked River School will return to its original purpose — home to teaching Grades 3 through 5.

Tuesday, voters passed by a 610–160 margin an $8 million project to renovate and expand the Route 11 facility. After failing a few times, the project will help alleviate overcrowding issues at Songo Locks Elementary. A big selling point was the ability of the school district to take on the plan without a serious impact to school spending. SAD 61 will be on the verge of retiring debts, thus by the time the Crooked River project is completed, there will be just a slight hike in debt payment.

“I’m extremely pleased…the school project passed in all towns,” Superintendent of Schools Al Smith said. “Thank you all for the work you have done in making this happen for the future of our students in our communities.”

Here’s how each town voted:

Bridgton — 174 yes, 47 no

Casco — 209 yes, 43 no

Naples — 227 yes, 70 no
