Man struck crossing Main Street by car

A Bridgton man was seriously injured Monday night when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Main Street.

Police say James Knox, 84, was crossing Main Street at 6:20 p.m., coming from the northern side at the intersection with Depot Street (entrance near Bridgton House of Pizza), when he was struck by a car. Mr. Knox was not in a crosswalk, according to police.

United Ambulance attended to his injuries and transported him to Bridgton Hospital. He was subsequently transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston by LifeFlight. According to a published report, Bridgton Police Officer Josh Muise said a family member informed him that Knox had two broken legs and underwent surgery on Tuesday.

The operator of the vehicle, Janna Levesque, 61, of Bartlett, N.H.,  stayed on scene, police said. There was minimal damage to the motor vehicle.

The accident is still under investigation. Muise, the investigating officer, said in a daily newspaper report, “It was a low-speed crash. He was crossing the road, and she didn’t see him. He also said he didn’t see her.”
