Player of the Week — Michael Clarke

Michael Clarke has really stepped up as a leader and competitor this season for the Lake Region boys’ cross-country team.

“Last year, he was just outside of our top 7 (varsity) runners. This year, he has been our consistent #4 and has drastically cut down his 5k PR (personal record); he entered the season having never broken the 20-minute barrier in XC, and just recently ran under 19:00 with a time of 18:52 at Festival of Champions,” Lake Region Coach Laura Pulito said. “This is the result of the work he put in over the summer running base mileage, and putting his best effort forth at every practice. What sets Mike apart the most, however, is his ability to believe in himself and his team. He is not afraid to set lofty goals, and he encourages and motivates his teammates to chase these goals on a daily basis. He is the ultimate hype-guy and brings contagious positive energy to every meet and practice.”

In recognition of his strong work ethic, determination, commitment and good sportsmanship, Michael is this week’s Boosters and Hancock Lumber “Player of the Week.” Each week, a Lake Region athlete is recognized for his/her dedication (does more than what is asked), work ethic, coachability and academic good standing. Recipients receive a specially-designed t-shirt, sponsored by Hancock Lumber.

Q. What do you find most challenging about the sport? Staying strong mentally through the race.

Q. What goal did you set for yourself this season, and what will it take to reach that goal? New Englands. It’s going to take a lot of hard work and the right mindset to do so.

Q. What is your favorite sports memory and/or achievement (explain why)?  My favorite sports memory was winning the rec championship with my best friend Evan Duprey. And my favorite achievement was winning a medal in the Dan Dors Invitational race, winning that was a tribute to him.

Q. How has sports made you a better person? Sports made me a better person by going out of my comfort zone to lead the teams I have been on, which correlates to the real world by volunteering and helping strangers. I love helping people and knowing that I’m the best person I could be. It doesn’t take much to be kind.

Q. Name a teammate or coach you admire and explain why? A teammate I admire is Susie Butler. Susie is always kind and ready to go. She will run anytime she can whether she’s sick or if she’s hurting. Susie will always compete to do her best. She’s a great captain and an awesome role model for the underclassmen on the XC team and in general. A coach I admire is Coach McCullough. He will always answer any question you have and will always be there to support you through it all. Coach M is also getting back into running which is very inspiring to the youth.
