Player of the Week, Evan Duprey

Evan Duprey

Lake Region varsity golfer Evan Duprey recently closed out his high school golf career in the grandest of ways — he posted the lowest score at the state competition on Friday, Oct. 6.

He also posted the second lowest scoring average for the season and was the team’s captain.

“His performance throughout the year was very steady, and he was always a class act on the course,” Lake Region golf Coach Walter Ridlon said. “He is respected by his teammates, opponents and opposing coaches.”

In recognition of his strong work ethic, determination, commitment and good sportsmanship, Evan is this week’s Boosters and Hancock Lumber “Player of the Week.” Each week, a Lake Region athlete is recognized for his/her dedication (does more than what is asked), work ethic, coachability and academic good standing. Recipients receive a specially-designed t-shirt, sponsored by Hancock Lumber.

Q. What do you find most challenging about golf? The most challenging thing in the game of golf, in my opinion, is the mental part of the game. If your mind isn’t in a positive spot it makes the game so much more challenging than it already is.

Q. What goal did you set for yourself this season, and what will it take to reach that goal? The goal I set for myself was to get to a point in my game where I could consistently shoot the scores that I wanted to shoot. To reach that goal, I practiced and played just about every day outside of practice so I could feel like I was at a comfortable level of my game.

Q. What is your favorite sports memory and/or achievement? One of my favorite sports memories this season was when our team shot the lowest team score we’ve ever recorded in my high school career. Everybody on the team was happy with how they played, and on the ride home, we all just were proud of each other and were celebrating the outcome that we accomplished. It felt good to be able to celebrate the team and our accomplishments.

Q. How has sports made you a better person? Sports have been a part of my life all my life and through the years I’ve learned a lot of things that I can bring into my life outside sports. Sports has been able to show me respect, for example toward officials and opponents, and I’ve been able to bring that into the rest of my life.

Q. Name a teammate or coach you admire and explain why? Coach Ridlon. This year has been great for the team. We all really appreciate the things he did for us, for example we had some new players this year who didn’t have a set of golf clubs, and coach went out and got them sets or whatever clubs they needed to fill their bags. Coach pushed us to be the best we could be, and would hold us accountable to things that a good coach would do. I think I can speak on behalf of the team and say that we are all grateful for having coach be there for us this season and for making this season a great experience for everyone.
