Bike Rodeo — Learning safety the fun way

CASCO — Some children might daydream about going to school, but being allowed to play outside with their friends for the duration. Maybe, everyone would be required to ride their bikes outside the school.

That daydream is a reality with the Bicycle Rodeo.

This Saturday afternoon for two hours, the parking lot at the Crooked River Elementary School will be transformed into a track for bicycles that is designed to teach children safe riding and the rules of the road. The bike rodeo is being held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The event is free. The rain date is May 10.

The bike rodeo “is a free community event designed to teach and encourage kids to ride bikes safely,” according to the flyer.

Children are being asked to bring their bikes and their existing helmets. Experts will be there to do a mechanical check up on bicycles. Children will be able to ride their bikes on a miniature roadway, created with chalk on the pavement outside the elementary school.

During the bike rodeo, there will be bike raffles and giveaways, free customized helmets for children, and snacks.

It is suggested that children bring a water bottle because they will be engaging in physical activity outdoors and will need to hydrate.

Casco Safe Streets, the Casco Parks and Recreation Department and the Bicycle Coalition of Maine are hosting, sponsoring the event.
