Richard B. Merrill

Richard Merrill

POLAND — Richard Bruce Merrill, 87, passed away October 17, 2023 at the Stephen’s Memorial Hospital in Norway after a number of stays in the hospital.

He was born October 10, 1936, to Kenneth and Iva Merrill. He and his five siblings were raised in Naples, Maine, and later on in life moved to Casco where he attended local schools.

He was always a loving husband and father. He was a hard worker at any place he worked
such as L.C. Andrew’s, Yudy’s Tire, a lumberyard and Sebago Shoe where he worked with his wife Olive before they retired.

He had many interest, he loved his antiques and his Civil War collection as well as antique cars. Another was his love for music, he taught himself to play a number of instruments with guitar, piano and harmonica being a few. He was always sharing his music talent and his voice with many. He looked forward to visiting the Casco Inn nursing home. Each time he’d get dressed in his western shirt, jeans, boots and top it off with his cowboy hat. He loved spending time with the residents and he made many friends and saw many smiles. You would always find my dad playing the piano before church started each Sunday.

Richard was predeceased by his brothers Wayne, Thomas and William and sister Elaine; his two sons Sergeant Daniel Lee Merrill and Richard Wayne Merrill.

He is survived by his loving wife Olive Merrill of 64 years, his sister Sandra King of Westbrook, Connecticut, his daughters Cathy Merrill Conley of Auburn, Maine, and Cheryl Merrill Underwood of Georgetown, Tex., and Ken Merrill. Grandchildren Jeremy Stieben of Las Vegas, Nev., Amanda Beard of Blaire, Okla., and Ashley Hartley of Naples, Claire Underwood Furman of Texas and Clark Underwood of Oklahoma and three great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters. And many nieces and nephews who all loved him.
