Player of the Week: Abby Green

Abby Green

Abby Green

From the first time Coach Kaitlyn Hall saw Abigail Green perform, she saw a talented cheerleader.

This fall, Abby has shown even more in her third year as a Laker cheerleader.

“Although she has always had an amazing talent that was impossible to ignore, it wasn’t until this fall season that she truly grew into a strong and passionate leader. I couldn’t be more proud of her,” Coach Hall said. “This has been a fun season and I’m excited to see what the winter has in store for Abby and the rest of the Lake a Region cheerleading team!”

In recognition of her strong work ethic, determination, commitment and good sportsmanship, Abby is this week’s Boosters and Hancock Lumber “Player of the Week.” Each week, a Lake Region athlete is recognized for his/her dedication (does more than what is asked), work ethic, coachability and academic good standing. Recipients receive a specially-designed t-shirt, sponsored by Hancock Lumber.

Why did you choose cheerleading? I chose to participate in cheerleading because it closely relates to gymnastics. I also love the team bonding behind it. We’re like a family.

What is the most difficult part of cheering? The most difficult part would be hitting a 100% perfect routine. Our routines are very long and you feel like you’ve just run a marathon. They’re also pretty difficult with the stunting.

What do you enjoy the most about cheering? I mostly enjoy stunting and tumbling. The rush to be put up in the air is so much fun.

What do you feel you need to work on and why? I feel as though I need to work on my jumps. They don’t always look very good.

Why is teamwork important? Teamwork is the single most important thing in cheerleading. If we go to put up our pyramid and one stunt group or even one girl doesn’t do what they’re supposed to do then the whole thing falls down.

What is the biggest impact your coach(es) have had on you? My coach is probably he only reason I can cope with everyday problems. Katie has helped me in so many ways, not just cheerleading. She does so much for every girl on the team. Without her, we wouldn’t be where we are now. Couldn’t do it without her.

How do you want people to view you as an athlete? I don’t want people to see me as just a good athlete, but a good example for the new girls. I want people to see me as someone they can come to.

Ten years from now, when you look back on your high school sports career, what do you think you will remember most? In 10 years when I look back, I’ll mostly remember my team. These girls are girls I never want to lose contact with. They all mean so much to me. Between the team and Katie, I don’t think I’ll ever forget even one practice.
