WATERFORD — People run the Waterford Fall Foliage 5K for different reasons.

Top female runners Audrey and Addie Blais of Naples used the Sunday run to help them build momentum for the upcoming high school conference championship at St. Joseph’s College this Friday. The two girls are leaders of the Lake Region cross-country team.

Others run because the race is for a good cause — it raises money for the Tony Waldeier Scholarship Fund, which benefits SAD 17 students.

Then, there was Arnie and Linda Elton. The scenic run enabled the Whitehouse, Ohio couple to scratch “Maine” off their bucket list.

The couple’s bucket list is to run a race in every state in the country, and they chose the Waterford race to participate in for the state of Maine. The two 65-year-olds came in 96th and 97th in the 5K, and seemed to really enjoy the festive occasion in Waterford.

“We would welcome them back anytime,” race officials said.

The 14th annual Fall Foliage 5K and Fun Run was held Sunday, in Waterford Flats, with 37 kids taking part in the 1 mile Fun Run and over 150 participating in the 5K.

Saige McGinnis, 12, of Harrison, won the female overall 1 mile fun run for the girls, with Matt McCaffrey, 10, of Franklinville, N.J. taking the overall for the boys.

Makoto Watanabe, 18, of Hebron blitzed the field with a time of 17 minutes, 55 seconds. Ryan Cloutier, 37, of Burlington, Vt. was second in 18:48 while Mark MacDougall, 19, of Naples was third in 19:13.

Audrey Blais, 15, was the first female in 20:47 while sister Addie, 14, was second in 21:41.

Race wrap-up

All the work by the race committee once again paid off, and things went very smoothly, with the road closed for most of the race. Lots of chili was brought by volunteers as part of the Waterford/Harrison PTO fundraiser. Hot dogs, muffins and pie were also sold.

Amy Sawyer of Waterford won chili cook-off for the second year straight by popular vote. The challenge for next year is to give Amy more competition for the trophy. Anyone can participate, so join next year.

The fall race is always held on the Sunday of the Columbus Day weekend, so runners and cooks, mark your calendars and we’ll see you then.
